Better Half Diner

When my husband suggested this little diner I was all for it. It was a little hole in the wall with a simple sign out front and an OPEN sign in the front window. Very popular with the community and now, after visiting, we know why.

Better Half Diner sits on the corner of West Washington St and Shelby St in beautiful Sandusky, Ohio. It has plenty of room for a group of people or a small table for two and even a counter with 5 stools if you want to talk directly to the cook or watch the local news. The second half of the diner is also an Ice Cream and Coffee shop that serves, none other than the local ice cream, Tofts! When the tables and counter fill up on one side the over flow sits in the ice cream and coffee shop where tables are also set up.

The inside of the diner is very homey and quaint with a brand new paint job and some freshening up. Don't feel embarrassed about asking about the decor...the owner of the diner was Egyptian and just recently passed away. His Hookah pipe came from Egypt and sits on a shelf above his photograph. Apparently he was a very kind man and loved to please his customers from what we were told by a local patron. It's not every day you get to experience kindness and culture all in a very short period of time. Now on to the service.

Our waitress, Katlyn, was very helpful with our decision for breakfast. She has the personality of someone who truly cares about her customers and how she presents herself. She greeted us almost immediately as we took a table in the corner and offered us our drinks. Within minutes my husbands coffee and my soda were served while we looked at our menus.

The hubby got the Big breakfast while I was in the mood for Eggs Benedict (today's special). The eggs in the Big Breakfast were light and fluffy with hashbrowns, green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, sausage and cheese mixed right into the eggs. The sausage gravy was quite a compliment to his breakfast.

The Eggs Benedict was made to perfection. The english muffin was toasted ever so delicately with a very nice portion of thick sliced ham over flowing the edges of the muffin. The eggs were rich and cooked just right with Hollandaise sauce covering the tops of the eggs. A small portion of homefries accompanied this breakfast delight. The outside of the potatoes were crunchy while the inside was soft.

If you like to get away from everyday life and sit down to a great meal, be it breakfast or lunch, this little diner will accommodate. If you are in Sandusky, Ohio for any one of their festivals or for Bike week, please do yourselves a favor and stop in to the Better Half Diner. You will not be disappointed. Friendly caring service and great food are only a few of the highlights of this city on the lake. Bon Appetit'.
