Cattlemans Restaurant
In the heart of the Amish community lies a small village where people gather together on Sunday morning to worship and praise God for all his wonders. But also to share a meal with thy neighbor. On this particular Sunday morning the hubby and I decided to go to Savannah, Ohio to a small diner called Cattlemans. When we arrived you could smell the bacon cooking on the grill. (Insert stomach growl here) When you walk in the door the friendly voices of chattering customers fill the diner as one lonely waitress hurries to fill coffee mugs and deliver fresh plates of food to tables.
We sat in a booth with a view of the small park across the street. We can
imagine the children playing on the swings while Mom and Dad are watching and enjoying the fresh picnic they packed for the day. With a smile, the waitress asked us for our drink order and she was quickly off to retrieve them. Once she returned we gave her our order. With a smile and a thank you she turned in our order to the kitchen. Here's what was on our plates this morning
The hubby, as usually, got his omelette. It was the meat lovers so you know it had to be good. The meat inside the omelette was very tasty. It consisted of sausage, ham and bacon with cheese to hold it together. Now when you think of sausage for an omelette you think ground and browned sausage. Well, at least we do. NOPE!!! He got huge chunks of sausage links. Huge chunks of ham and huge chunks of bacon. It was a meal fit for our birthday boy this morning. However, one slight downfall to this meal. Everything was over cooked.
I went outside my norm and ordered an omelette as well, but
designed my own. I happen to like smoked sausage so I put that along with bacon and grilled onions in mine. Can't forget the cheese to hold it together. Once again HUGE chunks of everything except the onion. I loved it but was a little disappointed that my onions were, well...a little on the black side. We also ordered a side of sausage gravy. It was the glue that made everything stay together. And very tasty I might add. The toast on the other hand was extremely dry and hard. Almost as if you were eating croutons. We added extra butter and jelly to see if that would soften it a little. Nope!! (Sad face)
All was not lost though. The meal was quite pleasant and the atmosphere was homey and layed back. The locals will sit after their meals and visit while waving to the Amish buggy's going by and in return wave back. The waitress fills their mugs of coffee and with a smile goes back behind the counter to prepare for the next customer.
So if you find yourself in the heart of Amish country and you happen to be in Savannah, stop at the Cattlemans Restaurant. It feels like home and smells like grandma's kitchen. Bon Appetit!!
