Rosie's Soup and Such
Rosie's Soup and Such is a staple in this small town of Tiffin, Ohio. This little diner has been in business for a good many years and that's where this review starts. Rosie's has been under new ownership only a few times. The new owner, Lori, kept the decor and that hometown feel going after she purchased the diner.
There is a counter where you can sit and talk with the wait staff or the cook along with Lori, the owner. Share stories of what this city used to be like before devastation of the famous flood and after. There are several booths along one wall and plenty of table seating as well.
Rosie's sits on the corner of Miami Street and North Sandusky Street in Tiffin, Ohio and is a very popular diner with most of the Tiffin University students and staff. Mainly due to the location. It sits directly across the street from Tiffin University. The other part largely due to the quantity of food and the outstandingly cheap prices. Ok....enough about the history. On to the belly busting food and everything that comes along with it.
Out of all the places we go and review, people have asked us mostly about Rosie's and have we ever dined there. Their reputation precedes them. Let me just say we have eaten our fair share of breakfasts at Rosie's. So now it's time to tell you about it.
First up we have The Breakfast bowl! This belly buster will send you home with a smile on your
face and a nap to ensue. The bowl starts off with homemade biscuits covered with tender home fries. Next we have the pork sausage layered, ever so gently, on top with a generous portion of light and fluffly scrambled eggs. And to top it all off, sausage gravy and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. If you are starving or just want to share with some other people at your table get the large. It's MASSIVE!! And for the price (which all the prices are excellent) it's well worth it and you can take home whatever you don't eat.
Next up, my favorite, Corn Beef Hash omelet. Y'all know I'm a sucker for corned beef hash and today was no different. However, it was different. As you can tell from the photo, the hash was burnt. I picked out some of the pieces and tried to eat most of it. I had to stop when I bit down on a chard piece of hash. Appetite lost. (Insert sad face here) As for the toast...I'm not quite sure why I was only given one and a half pieces. When the wait staff came back to our table (only because I had to ask for a clean fork) I asked if a little mouse had eaten a piece of my toast (hoping to get a smile but was ignored) She promptly stated she would have someone bring me a full piece.
Now here's the kicker. There are three waitresses in the diner. One took our order, another gave us our food and yet another took our plates. Question...who gets the tip? My bet is that none of them wanted anything to do with us since the last time we were there we were treated very poorly and well, if a customer is treated poorly you don't tip very well, right?
When my husband and I started going to Rosie's about three years ago, we saw friendly faces and they would stop to ask you how your meal was or just to chat about what was going on that day. About a year ago we stopped going because those friendly faces didn't look so friendly anymore. the wait staff was rude. The smiling faces were now dower faces and no one...I mean NO ONE, even asked us if we needed anything. I take that back...one of the wait staff refilled my husbands coffee and said, "What happened to your hash?" and walked off. When, yet, another wait staff took my plate she never said one word. She snagged the plate and ran off to the kitchen. She only stopped momentarily (several times while we were there) to look at herself in the mirror that adorns the back wall of the diner. If you forgot to put your make up on, don't worry. We aren't looking at you, sweetheart. We are looking at our food. It doesn't matter if you have make up on or not...your already beautiful! Take care of your customers and less time looking in the mirror. You will get better tips this way.
Not quite sure what happened a year ago that made the wait staff so mad, but cheer up! At least you have a job and a roof over your head and food on your table. Most people can't say that. So readers, if you want a good home cooked meal with a small town feel, head over to Rosie's. No, there won't be any smiling faces, but most of the food is really good and the prices are great.
Bon Appetit!!
