Sunbury Grill
You, our readers, know we love to travel and today we decided to stop by the Sunbury Grill. Now, we have passed by this little diner hundreds of times going back and forth to Hocking Hills College during the four years our son attended college there. We never stopped due to being on a tight schedule. Well, as you all know our children are all grown and on their own. So, what better way to enjoy the first day of July than to travel an hour and half just for breakfast and meet new people. When we pulled up to the grill we noticed they are in full spirit with the American Flag displayed above the door. (Two thumbs up)
The Sunbury Grill sits on Cherry Street in the very heart of Sunbury. This very quiet town is known for being a host to none other than John Chapman. Better known as Johnny Appleseed. He would stop in Sunbury on his many travels and visit the town folk and, I would imagine, planting some apple seeds along the way.
Also visiting this little Delaware outcrop was Major General William Starke Rosecrans. He served in the Engineering Corps and taught at West Point. engineered a river lock system and perfected lamp oil. As a commander of the Union Armies, he led his troops to victory during the Civil War. We can all take his words to heart "Stand by your flag and country, my men!" Most of us know what this really means.
That's your history lesson for the day. On to the food!
When you open the door to Sunbury Grill, you open the door to the past. To a time when everyone just slowed down to enjoy life. This little diner seats many people. However, if you get there after 8 am, you might have to wait to get a table. So have a seat outside and enjoy the view. Your table will be open soon.
The choices were tough this morning! Did we want omelets, french toast, pancakes...Well, we both decided to have omelets. The hubby had the Garbage Omelet. The fluffy egg concoction was filled with green peppers, onions, sausage, ham, bacon, mushrooms and filled with cheese. Topped off with a side of wheat toast. He was hard pressed to finish the whole thing but he was a trooper...he finished every last bite.
I had the Ham and Cheese Omelet. It is usually
my standard when I go out for breakfast if they don't have Corned beef hash or Eggs Benedict. It looked so good I couldn't wait to dig in. Light fluffy egg with the perfect amount of ham and loaded with cheddar cheese. I wasn't as successful as my hubby. I just couldn't make all of it fit into my stomach. I will say this, the toast was not burnt and tasted really good with their homemade sausage gravy! M M M!!
In order for the food to be this well rounded and delicious, you have to have the right staff to make it all come together. While we were waiting on our meal we had the honor of watching a "MASTER" chef do his thing. (Yes we did wait for a good 25 minutes for our food. However, it was well worth the wait.) With every turn of the spatula he would clean the grill to make sure every meal was to order. When going between eggs and meat and potatoes he would clean his spatula. NO CROSS CONTAMINATION HERE!!! This guy is a pro! He's quick, organized and knows his craft. Kudos Chef!! On the other side of the coin in any business you have to have friendly faces and someone who is willing to step in when needed. That my friends is Cassie! She is super nice, quick on the draw with coffee, soda or whatever you want to drink and eat. There is nothing that gets by her. She and her brother Kenny (Kenny is the owner and also super nice. We'll get to him in a minute) are the mainstays of Sunbury Grill. Cassie takes care of the front while Kenny does his fair share as well. (Ok Kenny, this is all you) Kenny, the owner, steps in when needed. Today, his wife, the other waitress, is out of state on family business and some of the staff called off. So, Kenny stepped in to do the prep work and dishes. When we told Cassie who we were, she told us that Kenny would love to talk to us. We would just like to say, Thank you for taking time out of your busy Sunday to meet us and talk about our experience.
Sunbury is a little out of the way village where you can still walk around town and see red brick roads and tree lined streets. It has an old country charm and friendly faces that aren't afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger. So if you are traveling south to Columbus, Ohio or just want to go for a Sunday drive, don't forget to stop by Sunbury Grill. It's like going home. Bon Appetit!
