Monroe Street Diner
If you have ever driven through Toledo, Ohio on SR 51, aka Monroe Street, you have passed by or probably stopped at the Monroe Street Diner. If you haven't stopped to eat here then you are missing out on some very delicious combinations of ordinary wrapped around Extraordinary food options. On our way up to Toledo I was looking over their menu and found some different food options set aside from the norm. Gyro omelet, sloppy joe omelet...WHAT??!! Who puts sloppy joes in an omelet? These guys do. And it is AMAZING!! We were told about this little diner from our son, Dillon, who lives in Toledo. We had the pleasure of dining with him and his girl, Claire this morning. Aside from the wonderful conversation we had with these two wonderful kids,
we were admiring the eclectic atmosphere. There were several tables and booths for all to sit and a counter with several stools. What was very different was the "writing on the walls". As you can see there is a mural of an old diner along with several clocks hanging, siting on counters and hanging in the bathrooms. 82 clocks to be exact. (the hubby counted them - because that's what he does) It is a very warm and welcoming diner and the staff is super friendly and very efficient. I was really impressed with the pleasant smiles and a jolly "Good Morning!" It made us feel as if we were in our own home.
Now on to what everyone wants to know...So this place is nice but what about the food? Well let me tell ya ....
The hubby and I love Gyros (pronounced "EROS") so what better breakfast idea than to put lamb, feta cheese and olives together and put it inside an egg shell. This lamb was perfectly seasoned with the savory spices used to accentuate the flavor of the meat, add grilled black olives and crumbled feta cheese. You can't forget the side of shaved potatoes topped with grilled onions, green peppers and cheese. Don't forget the toast! It was enough for two people but he finished every last bite.
For me I love Sloppy Joes! So why not try something that I love? This omelet comes with potatoes but I didn't order them. However, the hubby said they were really good. So I will trust him on this. As you can see these omelets are massive! The egg shell itself is super thin and cram packed with all the goodness of beef and sloppy Joe's seasoning. Top it off with toast and you have a great meal. On a sour note, the only thing we were not impressed with was the fact that our toast was a little on the "overdone" side. But no worries...it was still very good.
Miss Claire had two eggs over easy, home fries and rye toast. The home fries were seasoned perfectly with a light crunch on the outside and tenderness on the inside. The eggs looked amazing as well. Done to specification. Rye toast with a lightly browned outside was a perfect meal for this wonderful little lady.
Dillon used to be an extremely picky eater. However, now that he has experienced an extremely better life style, his tastes have changed for the EXTREME better. He takes care of himself and he minds what he puts into his body. So this morning he ordered scrambled egg whites, sausage patties, home fries with onions and cheese and a side of rye toast. Now...just so you know, this guy would have never eaten this when he was younger. But today he devoured what he could before he couldn't eat anymore.
I have to say this little diner was a pleasant surprise for us. Dillon was the one who suggested it since he has eaten here in the past. We normally read the reviews before going somewhere for a meal. This time...there was no need. We had a great morning drive to the Glass City to meet up with our son and his girl and had a great meal to boot.
If you follow this blog, and many of you do, please leave us a comment or email us with what you thought of a place we have written about. On a scale of 1-10 we would give the Monroe Street Diner a hard 8. Now that's impressive! Bon Appetit!
