Splinters Cafe
When you think of small town USA what's the first thing that comes to mind? There's nothing to do and nowhere to eat. Well, in this rural small town in Ohio (Carey, Ohio to be exact) there sits Splinters Cafe and Spirits. This gem of Northwest Ohio sits on SR 23 in the very heart of Carey, Ohio. Home of the Carey Blue Devils. I'm sure that most of the local residents go to Splinters before or after the game to grab a bite to eat. And as with any small town (at least the ones we've been to) the people are friendly and willing to talk to you about pretty much anything. It just feels like home.
When you walk in the door of Splinters Cafe you are welcomed by the local residents and the staff. Particularly Valerie. She was our waitress this morning. She was Johnny on the spot with coffee refills and pleasant conversation. She gave us suggestions on meal items if we wanted to come
back for supper. Apparently their BBQ ribs are out of this world. (Food for thought...yes, Pun intended) As you can see there are booths and tables everywhere. There is even a banquet room that will seat 50 people. The lighting is low and cozy and quite comfortable. So much so they have a hammock hanging just inside the door for those lazy days. But you need a ladder to get to it because it's hanging from the ceiling.
So now on to what you all want to know about.....THE FOOD!
I can usually guess what the hubby wants just about every time we eat breakfast. So today I made a few suggestions. He went with the the Southwest omelet. This beauty was filled with spicy taco meat, diced tomatoes, green onions, black olives and cheddar cheese. Just look at that tantalizing masterpiece. It comes with a side of jalapeno peppers, salsa and sour cream. If you want a little texmex......this is the place for you. The hubby finished this bad boy quicker than a gun slinger taking down Jesse James. (Sorry cousin...I had to do it)
As for me, I had to stay true to myself and my step son Dillon. If I find Eggs Benedict on a menu, you bet I'm gonna order it. He said I should compare all the Eggs Benedict I have eaten and write about them. Well, today I got a treat. These eggs benny were top notch. On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the best) they hit a solid 8!! The muffin was toasted perfectly with the ham sliced not to thick or thin and the eggs were poached beautifully. The sauce was perfectly blended with just the right amount of lemon. The hash browns were lightly browned and not over cooked either. It was a treat to my tastebuds.
As with anywhere we go to eat, we read the reviews of others who have been there before us. We read one review in particular that stated the cafe was to dark for breakfast. I beg to differ. I like to have a cozy atmosphere (low lights, music in the background) when I dine. This helps set the stage for a perfect meal because the attention is set on the company, the food and conversation. If it's too dark for you for breakfast then I might suggest you eat outside on their patio where there is seating available as well.
To sum it all up...Go...Eat...experience life other cities and small towns have to offer. It will amaze you. Bon Appetit!!
